The fall of our discontent - updated

I feel obligated to record here how close to despair I feel right now. It is incomprehensible to me that this monster may actually get power. It's beyond belief. I don't know what country I'm living in. God willing, by November this dread will be gone, and Trump will be history.

Update: Today's fear and loathing index.

Update 2: The descent into the heart of darkness continues. The horror, the horror.

Update 3: Beyond words. It's down to 51.8%.

Update 4: Has the worm turned? Please please.

I guess this is how history is actually made. The luxury of certainty is never bestowed even on those who are on the right side of history. As someone who are often annoyed by my own pessimism, I find myself curiously optimistic this time.

May your optimism prevail. I can't even believe it's come to this.

It's hard. It's a chilling reminder how precarious a pluralistic society always is. I do think the Republicans' inherent demographic disadvantages will stop Trump, and that the media polls are misreading certain things. But that Trump can break 25% of the electorate, let alone get the support of almost all conventional Republicans, is depressing.

It does also speak to the long-term failure of elites to convey the nature of world politics to the public in a way that would clarify why Trump is so dangerous. And, of course, it speaks to what 25 years of media hatred of the Clintons has wrought.
