This loss is indeed painful. I just want to let you know how important your little blog has been to me. I have been a loyal reader since the 2008 primaries, although I only started to comment recently. You mentioned in one of your posts that this is an "unread" blog. Well, at least one soul has been touched by your writing. I hope you will continue to post here, but I will certainly understand if you decide to take a break from the current affairs. I guess every one of us has to learn our own way to overcome this incredible setback.

I am very glad to hear that, and very grateful to you for saying it.

There are two dimensions to this. The first is the immediate, visceral one of fear for our fate. I, for one, can say "radical Trumpian terrorism," and it seems the terrorists have won. Yes, he'll betray his deluded "base" (which so fully deserves to have that pun applied as Edmund does), as he is already doing. But what remains will be apocalyptic enough, particularly with regard to climate change. As Country Joe put it, ain't no time to wonder why. Whoopee! We're all gonna die.

The second dimension is in the area of the heart. As you know, I fell for Hillary Clinton a long time ago. I regard her -- probably unrealistically, but at least interestingly -- as a more highly evolved form of our species. And the idea that this admirable and precious creature, whom God made to be President of the United States, would be thrown away -- a pearl, richer than all her tribe -- in favor of this pile of shit, this rough beast, its hour come round at last... well, that produces the feeling Humphrey Bogart's Rick describes of having a silly look on one's face because one's insides have just been punched out.

I feel exactly the same way. While the rational fear of what comes next is devastating, the loss of what we could have had is even more heartbreaking. My only comfort is knowing that Hillary can and will make peace with this. She is indeed a more highly evolved form of the human species and history has taken notice. Her not-so-evolved country, however, will face a difficult time making peace with itself in the years to come.
